The Importance of Good Protective Pickleball Eyewear

We probably have all been hit with the ball while playing pickleball. Generally, there is no harm. We laugh and resume play, but a hit to the eye is no laughing matter. 

Eye injuries during pickleball occur in a few different ways. A direct hit from the ball or paddle, or a deflection off the paddle is fairly common. The ball can travel up to 40 mph, and much of doubles play occurs with all four players at the kitchen line. This means you have about half a second to react to a ball traveling at max speed in a kitchen battle. Because of this, many players opt to wear some sort of eye protection. 

There are many options for eye protection. Most options are lightweight polycarbonate with UV protection, but there are many factors to consider. 

• Pickleball sunglasses with tint needed for indoor or outdoor play
• Anti-fog lens coating and/or frame vents
• Strap or no strap
• Wrap-around or no wrap-around frames

When choosing protective eyewear for pickleball, make sure the glasses do not hinder your vision, are comfortable and are a good fit. The key is, will you wear them?
