Stop Breaking It! The Pickleball Kitchen Rule

October 10, 2023

Are you new to the thrilling sport of pickleball? Learn about the importance of the pickleball kitchen rule to stop breaking it when you play!

If you’re new to pickleball, you may not know about the kitchen rule. Even relatively experienced players often break this rule during games. If you still don’t have a handle on this part of the game, don’t worry. We explain the pickleball kitchen rule below so you can stop breaking it!

What Is the Kitchen Rule in Pickleball?

The kitchen area is a 7-foot zone in front of the net that stretches to the sidelines. According to the kitchen rule, no part of a player—including their gear—should touch the ball during a volley if they’re standing in the kitchen. If the player hits the ball while they’re in the kitchen, it will result in a violation against them. However, a player can legally enter the kitchen and hit the ball if it bounces first.

Why the Kitchen Rule Matters
Understanding the pickleball kitchen rule helps you stop breaking it when learning to play the sport. The kitchen rule is crucial in ensuring the game remains fun and fair for all players. If players could volley the ball while standing in the kitchen, the game would become a contest of smashing, with the taller and stronger players having a significant advantage.
Constantly smashing the ball would make for a boring game with minimal time hitting the ball back and forth. Not to mention, smashing is dangerous for the players on the other side of the court.

Things To Avoid in the Kitchen in Pickleball
In addition to not volleying the ball while standing inside the kitchen, you should also avoid the following:
Hitting the ball before it bounces within this zone
Reaching over the net and hitting the ball in the kitchen area
Touching any part of the net with your body or racket
By remaining aware of your surroundings on the court, you’ll reduce the risk of breaking this rule. When playing doubles, teammates often call out, “Kitchen!” if their partner is in this area, ready to hit the ball. Remember, these guidelines exist to help players stay within the rules and continue to enjoy the game.
