There is no strict dress code for playing pickleball. However, knowing what to wear when playing pickleball can make you shine on the court from your sense of style and quality of play.
Your Glass Slipper
Arguably, the most critical aspect of your ensemble is your shoes. You can’t just throw on any pair of kicks and hit the court. You must be able to shift, cut, and dash safely and effectively, so it’s imperative to wear tennis or court shoes. Try to find a comfortable pair that supports your ankles and has rubber soles that provide a strong grip. The tread pattern of the shoes allows for the swift, lateral movements a pickleball play must possess. Lastly, the type of sole you should wear is dependent on the court’s surface. An organic rubber sole is best for indoor courts, whereas a synthetic sole is ideal for outdoor courts.
Keep It Comfortable
One major advantage of pickleball is that players prioritize comfort over anything else. There isn’t a specific type of shirt you must wear on the court, nor is there a magic formula that separates you from the opposition. Although fabrics that are loose and moisture-wicking will make you the most comfortable while playing. Otherwise, you can choose a lucky T-shirt, an athletic shirt from your favorite team, or even a tour shirt from the best concert you ever attended.
Don't Restrict Your Movement
On your legs, you will want to wear something that allows fluid movement. You don’t want to feel constricted while in the middle of a rally. A pair of athletic shorts work fine, as does a pair of sweats or leggings if the weather isn’t favorable. Some women may prefer
skirts, but they aren’t a requirement. If you’re so inclined, there are shorts made specifically for pickleball, allowing you to play for hours on end comfortably.
Don't Forget to Wear a Hat
With a preponderance of pickleball games outside, you will want something to shield you from the sun’s glare. Anything from a bucket hat to a visor will help you on the court, so it mostly comes down to your sense of style.
Protect Your Eyes
Some shots in pickleball are robust, putting you and your eyes in the line of fire. You don’t want to fall victim to a shot hitting you square in the eyes and regret that you didn’t have eyewear protecting your face from the jump. Thus, wearing
sunglasses or goggles prevents a catastrophe from happening.
