How Often Should I Replace My Pickleball Paddle?

January 18, 2022

The lifespan of a pickleball paddle depends on many factors. Normal wear and tear on a paddle, accelerated by frequent use and aggressive play, is part of the game.

How long does a pickleball paddle typically last?

Generally, the life span of a pickleball paddle is 1 to 5 years. It also depends on how frequently and how hard you play. Recreational players will get the most longevity and durability out of their paddle. Professional players, devoted tournament players, and those who "drill" often may only get the highest performance from their paddle for 3-6 months.

Normal wear and tear on a paddle, increased by constant use and aggressive play, is part of the sport. However, there are precautions you can take to help increase the life of your paddle.

  • Do not leave your pickleball paddle in the sun or locked up in your car on a hot summer day. Severe temperatures, including extremely cold temps, can jeopardize the composition of the paddle.
  • When you're not playing, keep your paddle in a bag or backpack to help protect it from unintentional scratches. We carry a large selection of pickleball bags that are both functional and stylish.
  • Avoid celebrating post-game by clinking your paddle with your opponent's paddle. This can help reduce the risk of additional damage.
  • Avoid leaning on your paddle to prevent putting added stress on the handle and frame.

A damaged handle or a severe crack in the paddle face will immediately compromise the playability. The gradual, more subtle issues are tougher to solve. Scratches, scrapes, and dead spots are unavoidable, but you may not notice any effects on playability if the issues are not in the sweet spot. The feel from shots in the sweet spot is what is most important when knowing if your paddle has been damaged.

When is it time to replace my pickleball paddle?

Dead spots in the sweet spot, though not visible, can make the paddle feel and sound different than it did when it was new. If your paddle has more texture and you rely on the texture for spin, the deterioration of the gritty surface may indicate that it is time for a new paddle. The bottom line: A compromised paddle will have a negative impact on your performance.
