Can You Play Pickleball in Cold Weather?

January 26, 2023

Knowing if you can play pickleball in cold weather depends on your equipment, your clothes, and if you’re willing to endure the harsh temperatures.

Seasonality is a significant factor in any sport. No one is playing baseball in December, and hockey in the summer sounds strange. Fortunately, some sports don’t have these concerns and can be a year-round activity. Do we consider pickleball year-round or seasonal? Can you play pickleball in cold weather? These are some things that you should consider before you tough it out in the cold.

Finding the Best Ball

While cold weather affects several sports balls in cold weather, its effect on a pickleball ball might be the greatest. Bitterly cold conditions can lead to unfortunate consequences for the ball in play. Pickleballs are durable and robust, but they endure excess stress from constant strikes from the paddle and the court’s hard surface. One way to combat these problems is to use a pickleball intended for outdoor play.

Outdoor balls have 40 small holes that can tolerate frigid temperatures. They are heavier and travel better than your average ball, although they are louder and more challenging to control. Anyone who relies on finesse as a part of their repertoire might run into unique challenges when using a cold-tolerant ball.

Paddle Considerations
Pickleball paddles are no different from other sporting equipment, meaning they may falter from the effects of cold weather. The center of the paddle is the cause for the most concern. Extremely cold temps may weaken the paddle’s face and core or even break them.
If you live in a region where it is generally chilly, you should keep your pickleball paddles in areas of your house that are safe from the cold. Additionally, don’t forget to remove your paddle from the trunk of your vehicle or an unheated garage during low temperatures.

Dress for Success
Dressing for the part is necessary to remain comfortable while you’re on the court during winter. There are two key aspects to consider when shopping for pickleball apparel: can you stay dry, and can you remain agile?
Playing pickleball will make you sweat even when you’re hovering around the freezing mark. When it’s hot outside, sweat may not be a big deal since it may trickle off your body and onto the court. However, since sweat clings to your clothes in cold weather, perspiration may make you feel colder. Wearing clothes made of moisture-wicking material is thus essential if you want to stay comfortable.
Because cotton absorbs moisture, simple cotton clothing might be problematic in cooler climates. It is preferable to play without a shirt than with a sweat-soaked one. The best action plan is to dress in two light layers, one draining moisture and the other shielding you from the wind. Together, these pieces of apparel will keep you warm while you play.
The garments you choose to don should enable you to move around the court easily. Wear clothing that allows you to move easily and effectively while retaining heat since bulky clothing restricts movement.
So, can you play pickleball in cold weather? You definitely can! However, you should keep these factors in mind before jumping on the court. Fromuth Pickleball is your go-to source for all things pickleball. From world-class paddles to stylish apparel, we’ve got you covered.
